Form 1099-K Communication Timeline
Ahead of the 2026 tax season, Dwolla will be communicating with the end users of our clients who meet the updated criteria for a Form 1099-K. Form 1099-K is a tax form that is used to report transactions taking place within payment networks to improve tax compliance.
Dwolla is required to issue 1099-K forms to participants in the Dwolla Network (meaning our clients and their customers) who received payments for goods and services exceeding certain federal or state reporting thresholds. For the 2025 tax year, the federal reporting threshold is $20,000 in gross payments for goods & services from over 200 transactions. Because Dwolla does not maintain sufficient information to file such reports on all eligible customers, Dwolla will need to obtain Form W-9 information from eligible customers.
Here are the different emails these customers will receive and when to expect them.
Form 1099-K Eligibility Email
Who will receive this email? Any of your customers who are eligible for a Form 1099-K, meaning the customer is a verified or unverified customer who has received $20,000 in gross payments for goods & services from over 200 transactions on the Dwolla Platform in 2025 or meets one of the state reporting thresholds.
When will this email be sent? This email will be sent on January 7, 2025.
Email Objective: To explain that your customer’s account is eligible for a Form 1099-K for the 2025 tax year and to notify the customer of Dwolla’s terms and privacy policy that allow for electronic delivery of this important tax form.

As a customer of [Client Name], your transfers on that platform are performed through your Dwolla account. Each year, Dwolla submits a Form 1099-K to the IRS for any user who qualifies for a Form 1099-K - those who, in the 2025 tax year, received more than $20,000 in payments for goods and services from more than 200 transactions in or through their Dwolla account. Dwolla also reports Form 1099-K information to applicable state tax authorities for users in the network when their payments exceed the relevant state reporting threshold.
Dwolla has determined that your payment receipts with [Client Name] exceed the federal threshold and/or the threshold for your state and, as such, we will need to file a Form 1099-K. Again this year, we will be delivering Form 1099-K and collecting Form W-9 information electronically. For more information about how we collect and use your information, please see our terms of service and our privacy policy.
If you have questions about this process, please contact [Client Name] or see our Frequently Asked Questions.
