As is demonstrated in the introduction of features like Next Day and Same Day ACH, Dwolla understands the importance of making new industry capabilities available to our customers. However, because domestic wire transfers continue to be a staple functionality in the world of B2B and B2C commerce, we’ve made the ability to wire in and wire out of the Dwolla platform available as part of the API.

Why current customers use it:

To move large transactions into or out of the Dwolla platform as quickly as possible, with modern API notifications.

How customers can send a wire transfer into the platform:

The customer initiates a wire in the same way that they do today, through their bank. The API functionality is there to tell us when a customer has initiated a wire and it’s on its way into our platform. On Dwolla’s side, we check our platform account to ensure the funds have cleared.

How customers can send wire transfers out of the platform:

The customer adds the bank as “wire” instead of the default ACH via the Access API. The customer can then call the API to transfer funds by providing us with the destination funding source ID they’ve added. Reference our wire transfer API resource guide for more information.

Here is a code sample of how you send a wire transfer via the Access API:

Customer use case:

Large companies that have heavily used wire transfers in the past may continue to want this functionality available to them when utilizing the Access API. For example, a customer may want to wire funds into the platform to then initiate mass payouts to their end users.
